ハザウェイ

大学に行く途上、ダニー・ハザウェイ（バラカン流正書法だと「ドニー」）の"Magnificent Sanctuary Band"（Donny Hathaway所収)を聞いていたら泣きそうになった。この曲、有名な曲ではないけれど、僕にとっては好きな曲のベスト１０上位には確実にランクインされると思う。リズムの格好良さ、ゴスペル風に盛り上がっていくところだけでなく、歌詞がたまらない。「子供の頃、通りを行くブラス・バンドを見てどう思った？」という語りからはじまって、「多くのひとが死んでいる」けど、「堂々とした聖なるバンドに加わろう」とダニーの声で来るんです。どないします、って感じ。
と、正確な歌詞を調べようと検索したら、この曲はカヴァーらしい。ドーシー・バーネットという50年代のロカビリー・シンガーがオリジナルだとか。調べてみるもんだ。ジェリー・ガルシアもカヴァーしているとか。色々掘り起こせそう。

よく読んだら、下手すればファンダメンタリストが喜びそうな歌詞。それをダニーが、公民権運動のアフターマスという状況で唄った時点で、どのように変わるのか。それはそのうち考察するつもり。
