Lecture: Kyoto Screens

The Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS) の主催する公開レクチャー（英語）が行われます。秋のレクチャー・シリーズの一つで、今回は「洛中洛外図」の研究者、マシュー・マッケルウェイ氏*1による講演です。

• 題目: "Temples and Warriors: Viewing Kyoto Screens in Early Modern Japan（寺院と武士：近世京都における洛中洛外図を見る）"
  • "Rakuchu rakugai zu," the boldly conceived depictions of Kyoto on pairs of folding screens have long held the imagination of students of Japanese history and art. These extraordinary works of art are both pivotal masterpieces of painting at the transition of medieval to early modern Japan, as well as richly detailed visual documents about a specific time and place. The recent discovery of a rare pair of screens depicting scenes of Kyoto's southern and western environs marks a significant addition to the small number of Kyoto screens painted before the Tokugawa unification, and raises anew questions about these paintings' authorship and audience. This lecture will introduce the newly discovered work, and will review the major unresolved issues related to the Kyoto screens' commission, production, and viewing milieu.

新出の狩野永徳筆とされる《洛外図》を巡って、その発注、制作、受容に関する講演のようです。英語での講演ですが、講演が終わった後には、多分無茶苦茶流暢な日本語で喋ってくれると思います。
