Abstract

One of the most renowned authors of modern Japanese literature, Natsume Sōseki (1867–1916), died on December 9, 1916[,] from a chronic stomach ulcer. His death was covered widely in the contemporary press. The Tokyo Asahi Newspaper (Tōkyō asahi shinbun), which was serializing Sōseki’s Light and Darkness (Meian) at the time, printed the author’s portrait on the fifth page, superimposed on a photograph of one sheet from his last handwritten manuscript of the novel. In this lecture, I will discuss the complex relationship between photography, memory and the death of the author employing the semiotic analysis of the obituary of Soseki as an example.
